What is Magnesium Hydroxide?
Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral. Magnesium is important for many systems in the body especially the muscles and nerves. Magnesium hydroxide also reduces stomach acid, and increases water in the intestines which may induce defecation.
Magnesium hydroxide is used as a laxative to relieve occasional constipation (irregularity) and as an antacid to relieve indigestion, sour stomach, and heartburn.
Magnesium hydroxide may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Magnesium Hydroxide indications
Treating acid indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach, and constipation. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Magnesium Hydroxide is an antacid. It works by neutralizing the acid in the stomach and by stimulating the bowels to move.
How should I use Magnesium Hydroxide?
Use Magnesium Hydroxide as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- Take Magnesium Hydroxide by mouth with or without food. Take Magnesium Hydroxide with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 mL).

Uses of Magnesium Hydroxide in details
This medication is used for a short time to treat occasional constipation. It is a laxative (osmotic-type) that is thought to work by drawing water into the intestines, an effect that helps to cause movement of the intestines.
This medication is also used to treat symptoms caused by too much stomach acid such as heartburn, upset stomach, or indigestion. It is an antacid that works by lowering the amount of acid in the stomach.
How to use Magnesium Hydroxide
Take this product by mouth as directed. For the chewable form, chew thoroughly before swallowing. For the liquid form, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose. If you are taking this medication for constipation, drink a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) with each dose. Follow all directions on the product package, or use as directed by your doctor. If you are uncertain about any of the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Extended use or overuse of this medication for constipation may result in dependence on laxatives and ongoing constipation. Overuse may also cause persistent diarrhea, loss of too much body water (dehydration), and mineral imbalances (e.g., high magnesium).
Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens. For constipation problems, it may take 30 minutes to 6 hours to produce a bowel movement. Tell your doctor if this product does not produce a bowel movement, if you need to use this medication or other laxative products regularly for more than 1 week, or if you have rectal bleeding. For stomach acid problems, do not take the maximum dose of this medication for more than 2 weeks unless directed by your doctor. If you think you may have a serious medical problem, seek immediate medical attention.

Magnesium salts should be used cautiously in patients with renal impairment due to increased risk of hypermagnesemia.
Liver Dose Adjustments
Data not available
Dialysis
Use of magnesium salts is generally contraindicated in renal failure. However, magnesium hydroxide has been used experimentally as a phosphate-binding agent for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia of renal failure. A reduction of the magnesium concentration in dialysate is required to avoid hypermagnesemia. Serum magnesium and potassium levels should be routinely monitored and kept within the normal range.
Other Comments
When used for the treatment of constipation, clinicians should instruct patients to drink 8 ounces of water with each dose.
