Clozil Pregnancy |
||
Clozil crosses the placenta and can be detected in cord blood and amniotic fluid (Arvela 1983; Bylsma-Howell 1983). Available studies do not report an increased risk of adverse pregnancy-related outcomes following maternal use. Extrapyramidal symptoms or methemoglobinemia may potentially occur in the neonate.
Clozil is one of the agents that may be considered for adjunctive treatment of nausea and vomiting in pregnant women when symptoms persist following initial pharmacologic therapy.
Oral or IM therapy may be given in patients who are not dehydrated; IV therapy should be used when dehydration is present (ACOG 189 2018). Clozil may be used for prophylaxis of nausea and vomiting associated with cesarean delivery (ASA 2016; Smith 2011).
Variable amounts are excreted in breast milk, with some infants receiving doses that achieve pharmacologically active serum levels, elevated serum prolactin and possible gastrointestinal side effects. This drug is used as a galactagogue, but its clinical value in increasing milk supply is questionable.
AU, UK: Use is not recommended. US: Use with caution. Excreted into human milk: Yes Comments: -The effects in the nursing infant are unknown.
