Description: Methylthioninium Chloride (Collyre Bleu Laiter) (methylene blue) lowers methaemoglobin levels in the RBCs through activation of reductase enzyme capable of reducing methylene blue to leucomethylene blue, which in turn reduces methaemoglobin to haemoglobin. Methylthioninium Chloride (Collyre Bleu Laiter) blocks calcium binding by oxalate and by organic stone matrix. It also reduces the tendency of calcium oxalate crystals to aggregate by acting as a crystal poison at the interface. It is a weak antiseptic at low concentrations.

Onset: Reduction of methaemoglobin: 30-60 min (IV).

Pharmacokinetics:

Absorption: Absorbed from the GI tract (53-97%).

Metabolism: Undergoes reduction to leucomethylene in the tissues.

Excretion: Slowly excreted in the urine as leucomethylene blue, with a small proportion as unchanged drug; some is excreted via the bile.

Naphazoline (Collyre Bleu Laiter) is a direct acting sympathomimetic drug, which acts on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the arterioles of the nasal mucosa. This activates the adrenal system to yield systemic vasoconstrction. In producing vasoconstriction, the result is a decrease in blood flow in the nasal passages and consequently decreased nasal congestion. The vasoconstriction means that there is less pressure in the capillaries and less water can filter out, thus less discharge is made.

How should I take Naphazoline (Collyre Bleu Laiter)?

Administration of drug is important to know because the drug absorption and action varies depending on the route and time of administration of the drug. A medicine is prescribed before meals or after meals or along with meals. The specific timing of the drug intake about food is to increase its absorption and thus its efficacy. Few work well when taken in empty stomach and few medications need to be taken 1 or 2 hrs after the meal. A drug can be in the form of a tablet, a capsule which is the oral route of administration and the same can be in IV form which is used in specific cases. Other forms of drug administration can be a suppository in anal route or an inhalation route.

Do not use Naphazoline (Collyre Bleu Laiter) ophthalmic solution if it becomes cloudy or changes color.

Naphazoline (Collyre Bleu Laiter) should not be used in infants and children. It may cause severe slowing down of the central nervous system (CNS), which may lead to unconsciousness. It may also cause a severe decrease in body temperature.

Use this medicine only as directed. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, and do not use it for more than 72 hours, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. To do so may make your eye redness and irritation worse and may also increase the chance of side effects.

To use:

  • First, wash your hands. With the middle finger, apply pressure to the inside corner of the eye (and continue to apply pressure for 1 or 2 minutes after the medicine has been placed in the eye). Tilt the head back and with the index finger of the same hand, pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch. Drop the medicine into the pouch and gently close the eyes. Do not blink. Keep the eyes closed for 1 or 2 minutes to allow the medicine to be absorbed.
  • To keep the medicine as germ-free as possible, do not touch the applicator tip to any surface (including the eye). Also, keep the container tightly closed.

Dosing

The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

  • For ophthalmic solution (eye drop) dosage form:
    • For eye redness:
      • Adults—Use one drop not more often than every four hours.
      • Children—Use is not recommended.

Storage

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

The sympathomimetic action of Naphazoline (Collyre Bleu Laiter) constricts the smaller arterioles of the nasal passages, producing a decongesting effect.
