What are the possible side effects of Etyfenac?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Etyfenac: sneezing, runny or stuffy nose; wheezing or trouble breathing; hives; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Side effects of Etyfenac in details

A side effect of any drug can be defined as the unwanted or undesired effect produced by the drug. The side effect can be major or in few medications minor that can be ignored. Side effects not only vary from drug to drug, but it also depends on the dose of the drug, the individual sensitivity of the person, brand or company which manufactures it. If side effects overweigh the actual effect of the medicine, it may be difficult to convince the patient to take the drug. Few patients get specific side effects to specific drugs; in that case, a doctor replaces the drug with another. Clinical Trials Experience

Because clinical trials are conducted under widely varying conditions, adverse reaction rates observed in the clinical trials of a drug cannot be directly compared with rates in the clinical trials of another drug and may not reflect the rates observed in practice.

The safety of a single dose of Etyfenac was evaluated in 2 placebo-controlled trials with a total of 634 migraine patients treated with Etyfenac for a single migraine headache. Following treatment with Etyfenac potassium (either Etyfenac or Etyfenac potassium immediate-release tablets [as a control]), 5 subjects (0.8%) withdrew from the studies; following placebo exposure, 1 subject (0.2%) withdrew.

The most common adverse reactions (i.e., that occurred in 1% or more of Etyfenac-treated patients) and more frequent with Etyfenac than with placebo were nausea and dizziness.

The most common adverse events resulting in discontinuation of patients following Etyfenac dosing in controlled clinical trials were urticaria (0.2%) and flushing (0.2%). No withdrawals were due to a serious reaction.

Postmarketing Experience

The following adverse reactions have been identified during post approval use of Etyfenac or other NSAIDs. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure.

Adverse Reactions Reported With Etyfenac And Other NSAIDs

In patients taking Etyfenac or other NSAIDs, the most frequently reported adverse reactions occurring in approximately 1%-10% of patients are: GI reactions (including abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, gross bleeding/perforation, heartburn, nausea, GI ulcers [gastric/duodenal], and vomiting), abnormal renal function, anemia, dizziness, edema, elevated liver enzymes, headaches, increased bleeding time, pruritus, rashes, and tinnitus.

Additional adverse reactions reported in patients taking NSAIDs include occasionally:

Body as a Whole: Fever, infection, sepsis

Cardiovascular System: Congestive heart failure, hypertension, tachycardia, syncope

Digestive System: Dry mouth, esophagitis, gastric/peptic ulcers, gastritis, gastrointestinal bleeding, glossitis, hematemesis, hepatitis, jaundice

Hemic and Lymphatic System: Ecchymosis, eosinophilia, leukopenia, melena, purpura, rectal bleeding, stomatitis, thrombocytopenia

Metabolic and Nutritional: Weight changes

Nervous System: Anxiety, asthenia, confusion, depression, dream abnormalities, drowsiness, insomnia, malaise, nervousness, paresthesia, somnolence, tremors, vertigo

Respiratory System: Asthma, dyspnea

Skin and Appendages: Alopecia, photosensitivity, sweating increased

Special Senses: Blurred vision

Urogenital System: Cystitis, dysuria, hematuria, interstitial nephritis, oliguria/polyuria, proteinuria, renal failure

Other adverse reactions in patients taking NSAIDs, which occur rarely, are:

Body as a Whole: Anaphylactic reactions, appetite changes, death

Cardiovascular System: Arrhythmia, hypotension, myocardial infarction, palpitations, vasculitis

Digestive System: Colitis, eructation, liver failure, pancreatitis

Hemic and Lymphatic System: Agranulocytosis, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, lymphadenopathy, pancytopenia

Metabolic and Nutritional: Hyperglycemia

Nervous System: Convulsions, coma, hallucinations, meningitis

Respiratory System: Respiratory depression, pneumonia

Skin and Appendages: Angioedema, toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, urticaria

Special Senses: Conjunctivitis, hearing impairment

What is the most important information I should know about Etyfenac?

Etyfenac contraindications

Contraindication can be described as a special circumstance or a disease or a condition wherein you are not supposed to use the drug or undergo particular treatment as it can harm the patient; at times, it can be dangerous and life threatening as well. When a procedure should not be combined with other procedure or when a medicine cannot be taken with another medicine, it is called Relative contraindication. Contraindications should be taken seriously as they are based on the relative clinical experience of health care providers or from proven research findings.

Hypersensitivity to Etyfenac sodium or to any of the excipients of Etyfenac.

Active gastric or intestinal ulcer, bleeding or perforation.

Last trimester of pregnancy.

Hepatic, renal and severe cardiac failure.

Patients in whom attacks of asthma, urticaria or acute rhinitis are precipitated by acetylsalicylic acid and/or other drugs with prostaglandin-synthetase inhibitory activity.

Treatment of peri-operative pain in setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

The use of high dose Etyfenac (150 mg/day) for >4 weeks is contraindicated in patients with established cardiovascular disease (congestive heart failure, established ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease) or uncontrolled hypertension.

Established Cardiovascular Disease or Significant Cardiovascular Risk Factors: The use of high dose Etyfenac (150mg/day) for >4 weeks is contraindicated in patients with established cardiovascular disease (congestive heart failure, established ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease) or uncontrolled hypertension. If Etyfenac treatment is needed, patients with established cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension or significant cardiovascular risk factors (eg, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes mellitus and smoking) should be treated only after careful consideration and at doses ≤100 mg daily if the treatment is for >4 weeks. As the cardiovascular risks of Etyfenac may increase with dose and duration of exposure, Etyfenac should always be prescribed at the lowest effective daily dose and for the shortest duration possible.

Renal Impairment: Etyfenac is contraindicated in patients with renal failure. No specific studies have been carried out in patients with renal impairment, therefore, no specific dose adjustment recommendations can be made. Caution is advised when administering Etyfenac to patients with mild to moderate renal impairment.

Hepatic Impairment: Etyfenac is contraindicated in patients with hepatic failure. No specific studies have been carried out in patients with hepatic impairment, therefore, no specific dose adjustment recommendations can be made. Caution is advised when administering Etyfenac to patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment.
