L-Ornispar is a basic amino acid and is important in the formation of urea. It is a nonprotein amino acid which means that it does not occur in proteins. The body uses it in the biosynthesis of L-arginine, L-proline and polyamines.
L-Ornispar is sometimes used as a nutritional supplement for its putative anabolic activity, even though there is little evidence to support this. However, there is a derivative of L-Ornispar called Ornispar alpha-ketoglutarate or OKG which, under certain conditions, may have immunomodulatory and anticatabolic and/or anabolic actions.

Ornispar description
Each mL of the infusion concentrate contains Ornithine 500 mg.
Ornispar dosage
Patients may be given up to 4 ampoules/day. With incipient clouding of consciousness (pre-coma) or clouding of consciousness (coma), up to 8 ampoules may be given in 24 hrs, depending on the severity of the condition.
The ampoules are added to an infusion solution before use and infused in this form.
Ornispar infusion concentrate can be mixed with the usual infusion solutions without any problem. For venous tolerability, however, no >6 ampoules should be dissolved per 500 mL infusion.
The maximum infusion rate is L-Ornispar L-aspartate 5 g (corresponding to the content of 1 ampoule)/hr.
Ornispar infusion concentrate must not be administered into an artery.

Ornispar side effects
Infusion conc: Nausea, vomiting (uncommon). Granules: Nausea, vomiting, stomachache, flatulence, diarrhea (uncommon); pain in the limbs (very rare).
Ornispar contraindications
Hypersensitivity to L-Ornispar L-aspartate or to any of the excipients of Ornispar. Severe renal impairment (renal failure). A serum creatinine level in excess of 3 mg/100 mL can be taken as a guide.
