Pharmacology: Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) is a selective serotonin (5HT) re-uptake inhibitor used for the treatment of depression and panic disorder.
Mechanism of Action: The pharmacological and clinical effects of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) are attributed to 5HT reuptake inhibition. It has low affinity for a number of receptors including 5HT1A, 5HT2, D1 and D2 receptors, α1, α2, β-adrenoreceptors, histamine, muscarinic, benzodiazepine and opioid receptors.
Pharmacokinetics: The absorption of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) is almost completely independent of food intake. As with racemic citalopram, the absolute bioavailability of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) is expected to be 80%. Following a single dose of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) 20 mg, the mean Tmax was reported to be 5±1.5 hrs. Steady-state plasma levels are reached in about 1 week.
Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) is metabolised in the liver to the demethylated and didemethylated metabolites, both of these are pharmacologically active. Biotransformation of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) to the demethylated metabolite is mediated primarily by CYP2C19 with some possible contribution by the enzymes CYP3A4 and CYP2D6. The plasma protein-binding is <80% for Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) and its main metabolites.
The elimination t½ after multiple dosing is about 30 hrs and the oral plasma clearance is about 0.6 L/min. Elimination of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) and the major metabolites are assumed to occur both by the hepatic and the renal routes, with the major part of the dose excreted as metabolites in the urine.
The elimination of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) is more slow in elderly patients as compared to younger patients. Systemic exposure (AUC) is about 50% higher in elderly compared to young healthy volunteers.
Take Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) only as directed by your doctor to benefit your condition as much as possible. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered.
Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) should come with a Medication Guide. Read and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) may be taken with or without food. If your doctor tells you to take it at a specific time, follow your doctor's instructions.
If you are using the oral liquid, shake the bottle well before measuring each dose. Use a marked measuring spoon, oral syringe, or medicine cup to measure each dose. The average household teaspoon may not hold the right amount of liquid.
You may have to take Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) for a month or longer before you begin to feel better.
The dose of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS). If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.
If you miss a dose of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS), take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.
Keep out of the reach of children.
Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
Ask your healthcare professional how you should dispose of any medicine you do not use.
Oral: Administer once daily (morning or evening), with or without food.
Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) is one of a class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is used to treat the depression associated with mood disorders. It is also used on occassion in the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder and anxiety. The antidepressant, antiobsessive-compulsive, and antibulimic actions of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) are presumed to be linked to its inhibition of CNS neuronal uptake of serotonin. In vitro studies show that Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) is a potent and selective inhibitor of neuronal serotonin reuptake and has only very weak effects on norepinephrine and dopamine neuronal reuptake. Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) has no significant affinity for adrenergic (alpha1, alpha2, beta), cholinergic, GABA, dopaminergic, histaminergic, serotonergic (5HT1A, 5HT1B, 5HT2), or benzodiazepine receptors; antagonism of such receptors has been hypothesized to be associated with various anticholinergic, sedative, and cardiovascular effects for other psychotropic drugs. The chronic administration of Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) was found to downregulate brain norepinephrine receptors, as has been observed with other drugs effective in the treatment of major depressive disorder. Escitalopram (Placida PLUS) does not inhibit monoamine oxidase.
Etizolam (Placida PLUS) belongs to a class of medication called benzodiazepines. It works by enhancing the action of a signaling chemical called gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), which helps to calm the brain. This, in turn, induces sleep and causes relaxation of muscles in the body.
