How do you administer this medicine?
An indication is a term used for the list of condition or symptom or illness for which the medicine is prescribed or used by the patient. For example, acetaminophen or paracetamol is used for fever by the patient, or the doctor prescribes it for a headache or body pains. Now fever, headache and body pains are the indications of paracetamol. It is given if the patient is unable to take oral or rectally delivered paracetamol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are contraindicated. The onset of analgaesia from Pro-Dafalgan is more rapid than paracetamol given orally. 2g of Pro-Dafalgan are equivalent to 1g of paracetamol.
Pro-Dafalgan is a prodrug form of paracetamol which is formed from esterification of paracetamol, and the carboxylic acid diethylglycine. This has the advantage of making it more water-soluble. It is used in post-operative care and is delivered by I.V. Pain and fever
Adult: 1-2 g every 4 hr, up to 4 times daily. May be given via IM/IV inj. Max dose: 8 g daily.
Child: 20-30 mg/kg, given over 15 min, up to 4 times daily. Max dose: 120 mg/kg/day.
Pro-Dafalgan side effects
Eczema contact during the preperation by the nursing staff with risk of hyper-sensitivity reactions => Gloves
- Allergy minor, thrombocytopenia, exceptional
- Malaise, pain during a rapid injection
Severe hepatic impairment, glutathione synthetase deficiency
Hypersensitivity to paracetamol and Pro-Dafalgan, In particular with nursing staff in
1 st trimester
