Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules, also called nicotinic acid, is a B vitamin (vitamin B3). It occurs naturally in plants and animals, and is also added to many foods as a vitamin supplement. Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules is also present in many multiple vitamins and nutritional supplements.
Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules is used to treat and prevent a lack of natural Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules in the body, and to lower cholesterol and triglycerides (types of fat) in the blood. It is also used to lower the risk of heart attack in people with high cholesterol who have already had a heart attack. Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules is sometimes used to treat coronary artery disease (also called atherosclerosis).

Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets USP are indicated to reduce elevated TC, LDL-C, Apo B and TG levels, and to increase HDL-C in patients with primary hyperlipidemia and mixed dyslipidemia.

In patients with a history of myocardial infarction and hyperlipidemia, Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules, USP is indicated to reduce the risk of recurrent nonfatal myocardial infarction.

Limitations of Use
Addition of Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets USP did not reduce cardiovascular morbidity or mortality among patients treated with simvastatin in a large, randomized controlled trial (AIM-HIGH).

To minimize flushing and upset stomach, take Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules controlled-release tablets at bedtime after a low-fat snack (eg, low-fat yogurt, banana, crackers with a glass of milk) unless your doctor directs otherwise. Do not take Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules controlled-release tablets on an empty stomach. Do not take Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules controlled-release tablets with alcohol, a hot drink, or spicy foods.
Do not take bile acid sequestrants (eg, colestipol, cholestyramine) within 4 to 6 hours of taking Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules controlled-release tablets.
Swallow Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules controlled-release tablets whole. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing.
If you miss a dose of Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules controlled-release tablets, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. If you miss several doses, contact your doctor.

Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules (nicotinic acid) is used to prevent and treat Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules deficiency (pellagra). Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules deficiency may result from certain medical conditions (such as alcohol abuse, malabsorption syndrome, Hartnup disease), poor diet, or long-term use of certain medications (such as isoniazid).
Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules deficiency can cause diarrhea, confusion (dementia), tongue redness/swelling, and peeling red skin. It is generally used after non-drug treatments have not been fully successful at lowering cholesterol. Doses for treating these blood fat problems are usually much higher than for dietary problems.
How to use B-3 Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules
Take this medication by mouth with a low-fat meal or snack as directed by your doctor, usually 1-3 times daily. Taking Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules on an empty stomach increases side effects (such as flushing, upset stomach). Follow all directions on the product package. If your doctor has prescribed this medication, take it as directed. If you are uncertain about any of the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules is available in different formulations (such as immediate and sustained release). Do not switch between strengths, brands, or forms of Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules. Severe liver problems may occur.
Swallow extended-release capsules whole. Do not crush or chew extended-release capsules or tablets. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects. Also, do not split extended-release tablets unless they have a score line and your doctor or pharmacist tells you to do so. Swallow the whole or split tablet without crushing or chewing.
To lessen the chance of side effects such as flushing, avoid alcohol, hot beverages, and eating spicy foods near the time you take Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules. Taking a plain (non-enteric coated, 325 milligram) aspirin or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (such as ibuprofen, 200 milligrams) 30 minutes before taking Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules may help prevent flushing. Ask your doctor if this treatment is right for you.
If you also take certain other drugs to lower cholesterol (bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine or colestipol), take Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules at least 4 to 6 hours before or after taking these medications. These products interact with Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules, preventing its full absorption. Continue to take other medications to lower your cholesterol as directed by your doctor.
The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. If you are taking this for lipid problems, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose to reduce your risk of side effects. Your dose will need to be increased slowly even if you are already taking Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules and are being switched from another Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules product to this product. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
Do not stop taking this medicine unless instructed by your doctor. If you stop taking Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules, you may need to return to your original dose and gradually increase it again. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for instructions on restarting your dose if you have not taken your medication for several days.
Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day.

Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules dosage
Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets should be taken at bedtime, after a low-fat snack, and doses should be individualized according to patient response. Therapy with Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets must be initiated at 500 mg at bedtime in order to reduce the incidence and severity of side effects which may occur during early therapy. The recommended dose escalation is shown in Table 1 below.

Maintenance Dose
The daily dosage of Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets should not be increased by more than 500 mg in any 4-week period. The recommended maintenance dose is 1000 mg (two 500 mg tablets or one 1000 mg tablet) to 2000 mg (two 1000 mg tablets or four 500 mg tablets) once daily at bedtime. Doses greater than 2000 mg daily are not recommended. Women may respond at lower Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablet doses than men.
Single-dose bioavailability studies have demonstrated that two of the 500 mg and one of the 1000 mg tablet strengths are interchangeable but three of the 500 mg and two of the 750 mg tablet strengths are not interchangeable.
Flushing of the skin may be reduced in frequency or severity by pretreatment with aspirin (up to the recommended dose of 325 mg taken 30 minutes prior to Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablet dose). Tolerance to this flushing develops rapidly over the course of several weeks. Flushing, pruritus, and gastrointestinal distress are also greatly reduced by slowly increasing the dose of Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules and avoiding administration on an empty stomach. Concomitant alcoholic, hot drinks or spicy foods may increase the side effects of flushing and pruritus and should be avoided around the time of Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablet ingestion.
Equivalent doses of Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets should not be substituted for sustained-release (modified-release, timed-release) Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules preparations or immediate-release (crystalline) Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules. Patients previously receiving other Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules products should be started with the recommended Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablet titration schedule, and the dose should subsequently be individualized based on patient response.
If Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablet therapy is discontinued for an extended period, reinstitution of therapy should include a titration phase.
Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets should be taken whole and should not be broken, crushed or chewed before swallowing.
Dosage in Patients with Renal or Hepatic Impairment
Use of Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets in patients with renal or hepatic impairment has not been studied. Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets are contraindicated in patients with significant or unexplained hepatic dysfunction. Slo-Niacin Controlled-Release Capsules Extended-Release Tablets should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment.
