What is Symfona?
Symfona blocks some of the fat that you eat, keeping it from being absorbed by your body.
Symfona is used together with a reduced-calorie diet and weight maintenance to treat obesity in people with certain risk factors (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol or triglycerides).
Symfona may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
It is dangerous to purchase Symfona on the Internet or from vendors outside of the United States. Medications distributed from Internet sales may contain dangerous ingredients, or may not be distributed by a licensed pharmacy. Samples of "Symfona" purchased on the Internet have been found to contain sibutramine (Meridia), a prescription weight loss medication that can have dangerous side effects in certain people. For more information, contact the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or visit www.fda.gov/buyonlineguide.
Symfona™ (Symfona 60 mg) is indicated for weight loss in overweight adults, 18 years and older, when used along with a reduced-calorie and low-fat diet.
Diet and exercise are the starting points for any weight loss program. Try these first before adding Symfona (Symfona 60 mg). Check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.
To determine if Symfona (Symfona 60 mg) capsules are right for you, find your height on the chart below. You may consider starting with Symfona (Symfona 60 mg) if your weight is the same or more than the weight shown for your height.
How should I use Symfona?
Use Symfona as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- An extra patient leaflet is available with Symfona. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
- Read the chart on the medicine package. You may consider starting Symfona if your weight is the same or more than the weight shown for your height. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
- Take Symfona by mouth with each meal. Do not take more than 3 capsules daily.
- If a meal is missed or contains no fat, do not take a dose of Symfona.
- Symfona may decrease your absorption of vitamins. Take a multivitamin once a day at bedtime.
- If you also take a thyroid hormone (eg, levothyroxine), do not take it within 4 hours before or after taking Symfona. Check with your doctor if you have questions.
- If you also take cyclosporine, do not take it within 3 hours before or after taking Symfona. Check with your doctor if you have questions.
- If you miss a dose of Symfona, skip the missed dose. Continue to take it as directed by your doctor or on the package label.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Symfona.
Uses of Symfona in details
Symfona is used for weight loss along with an exercise and diet regimen. It is also prescribed by doctors to overweight people who may be suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart patients. It is also used to stop weight gain after weight reduction.
Symfona is a drug designed to treat obesity. Its primary function is preventing the absorption of fats from the human diet, thereby reducing caloric intake. Symfona works by inhibiting pancreatic lipase, an enzyme that breaks down triglycerides in the intestine. Without this enzyme, triglycerides from the diet are prevented from being hydrolyzed into absorbable free fatty acids and are excreted undigested.
The recommended dose of Symfona is one 120-mg capsule three times a day with each main meal containing fat (during or up to 1 hour after the meal).
The patient should be on a nutritionally balanced, reduced-calorie diet that contains approximately 30% of calories from fat. The daily intake of fat, carbohydrate, and protein should be distributed over three main meals. If a meal is occasionally missed or contains no fat, the dose of Symfona can be omitted.
Because Symfona has been shown to reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and betacarotene, patients should be counseled to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrition. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before or after the administration of Symfona, such as at bedtime.
For patients receiving both Symfona and cyclosporine therapy, administer cyclosporine 3 hours after Symfona.
For patients receiving both Symfona and levothyroxine therapy, administer levothyroxine and Symfona at least 4 hours apart. Patients treated concomitantly with Symfona and levothyroxine should be monitored for changes in thyroid function.
Doses above 120 mg three times a day have not been shown to provide additional benefit.
Based on fecal fat measurements, the effect of Symfona is seen as soon as 24 to 48 hours after dosing. Upon discontinuation of therapy, fecal fat content usually returns to pretreatment levels within 48 to 72 hours.

Data from a Symfona and cyclosporine drug interaction study indicate a reduction in cyclosporine plasma levels when Symfona was coadministered with cyclosporine. Symfona and cyclosporine should not be simultaneously coadministered. Cyclosporine should be administered 3 hours after the administration of Symfona.
Fat-soluble Vitamin Supplements And Analogues
Data from a pharmacokinetic interaction study showed that the absorption of beta-carotene supplement is reduced when concomitantly administered with Symfona. Symfona inhibited absorption of a vitamin E acetate supplement. The effect of Symfona on the absorption of supplemental vitamin D, vitamin A, and nutritionally-derived vitamin K is not known at this time.
Hypothyroidism has been reported in patients treated concomitantly with Symfona and levothyroxine postmarketing. Patients treated concomitantly with Symfona and levothyroxine should be monitored for changes in thyroid function. Administer levothyroxine and Symfona at least 4 hours apart.
Anticoagulants Including Warfarin
Vitamin K absorption may be decreased with Symfona. Reports of decreased prothrombin, increased INR and unbalanced anticoagulant treatment resulting in change of hemostatic parameters have been reported in patients treated concomitantly with Symfona and anticoagulants. Patients on chronic stable doses of warfarin or other anticoagulants who are prescribed Symfona should be monitored closely for changes in coagulation parameters.
A pharmacokinetic study, where amiodarone was orally administered during Symfona treatment, demonstrated a reduction in exposure to amiodarone and its metabolite, desethylamiodarone. A reduced therapeutic effect of amiodarone is possible. The effect of commencing Symfona treatment in patients on stable amiodarone therapy has not been studied.
Convulsions have been reported in patients treated concomitantly with Symfona and antiepileptic drugs. Patients should be monitored for possible changes in the frequency and/or severity of convulsions.
Loss of virological control has been reported in HIV-infected patients taking Symfona concomitantly with antiretroviral drugs such as atazanavir, ritonavir, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, emtricitabine, and with the combinations lopinavir/ritonavir and emtricitabine/efavirenz/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. The exact mechanism for this is unclear, but may include a drug-drug interaction that inhibits systemic absorption of the antiretroviral drug. HIV RNA levels should be frequently monitored in patients who take Symfona while being treated for HIV infection. If there is a confirmed increase in HIV viral load, Symfona should be discontinued.
Drug Abuse And Dependence
As with any weight-loss agent, the potential exists for abuse of Symfona in inappropriate patient populations (e.g., patients with anorexia nervosa or bulimia). See INDICATIONS AND USAGE for recommended prescribing guidelines.
Symfona side effects
Some people on Symfona™ (Symfona 60 mg) will experience GI side effects, which is expected since Symfona (Symfona 60 mg) works by inhibiting about 25% of dietary fat. Symfona (Symfona 60 mg) is half the strength of prescription Symfona® (Symfona 120 mg), and, as a result, has fewer GI events overall than Symfona®. In clinical trials, subjects on 120 mg withdrew due to GI adverse events at a rate of 5.4%-and at 60 mg it was only 3.2%.
The main treatment effect occurs when an individual eats a meal with too much fat while taking Symfona (Symfona 60 mg). Treatment effects may include:
- Loose or more frequent stools that may be hard to control
- An urgent need to go to the bathroom
- Gas with oily spotting
- While excess fat that is excreted is not harmful, patients could be distressed by the experience. Treatment effects can be lessened if an individual sticks with reduced-calorie, low-fat meals that average 15 grams of fat per meal (or 30% fat or less). Diets may vary from 1,200 calories to 1,800 calories per day, so 15 grams is an average. Individuals need to be aware of hidden fat in food, so that they can lower the chance of having treatment effects.
Not all individuals will experience treatment effects, but those that do can reduce the likelihood of these effects by taking Symfona (Symfona 60 mg) as directed and sticking with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet. The Symfona (Symfona 60 mg) starter pack includes portable reference guides and online support at myalli (Symfona 60 mg).com to help patients follow the program accurately. Some patients may experience treatment effects as they begin therapy until they learn to adjust their diet.
Do not take Symfona if you are pregnant. Weight loss is not recommended during pregnancy, even if you are overweight or obese.
You should not take this medication if you are allergic to Symfona, if you are pregnant, or if you have gallbladder problems or chronic malabsorption syndrome (an inability to absorb food and nutrients properly).
Before taking Symfona, tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid, a history of gallstones or pancreatitis, type 1 or type 2 diabetes, an eating disorder, liver or kidney disease, or if you take other weight-loss medications (prescription or over-the-counter).
Do not give over-the-counter Symfona to a child younger than 18 years old. Prescription Symfona should not be used by anyone age 12 to 18 without the advice of a doctor.
Symfona should be used only by the person for whom it was prescribed. Never share Symfona with another person, especially someone who has a history of eating disorder. Keep the medication in a place where others cannot get to it.
Symfona is only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, and weight control. Your daily intake of fat, protein, and carbohydrates should be evenly divided over all of your daily meals. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely.
Avoid a diet that is high in fat. High-fat meals taken in combination with Symfona can increase your risk of unpleasant side effects on your stomach or intestines.
