What is Viplena 120?
Viplena 120 blocks some of the fat that you eat, keeping it from being absorbed by your body.
Viplena 120 is used together with a reduced-calorie diet and weight maintenance to treat obesity in people with certain risk factors (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol or triglycerides).
Viplena 120 may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
It is dangerous to purchase Viplena 120 on the Internet or from vendors outside of the United States. Medications distributed from Internet sales may contain dangerous ingredients, or may not be distributed by a licensed pharmacy. Samples of "Viplena 120" purchased on the Internet have been found to contain sibutramine (Meridia), a prescription weight loss medication that can have dangerous side effects in certain people. For more information, contact the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or visit www.fda.gov/buyonlineguide.

Uses of Viplena 120 in details
Viplena 120 is used for weight loss along with an exercise and diet regimen. It is also prescribed by doctors to overweight people who may be suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart patients. It is also used to stop weight gain after weight reduction.
Viplena 120 description
Viplena 120 is a drug designed to treat obesity. Its primary function is preventing the absorption of fats from the human diet, thereby reducing caloric intake. Viplena 120 works by inhibiting pancreatic lipase, an enzyme that breaks down triglycerides in the intestine. Without this enzyme, triglycerides from the diet are prevented from being hydrolyzed into absorbable free fatty acids and are excreted undigested.
Viplena 120 dosage
The recommended dose of Viplena 120 is one 120-mg capsule three times a day with each main meal containing fat (during or up to 1 hour after the meal).
The patient should be on a nutritionally balanced, reduced-calorie diet that contains approximately 30% of calories from fat. The daily intake of fat, carbohydrate, and protein should be distributed over three main meals. If a meal is occasionally missed or contains no fat, the dose of Viplena 120 can be omitted.
Because Viplena 120 has been shown to reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and betacarotene, patients should be counseled to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrition. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before or after the administration of Viplena 120, such as at bedtime.
For patients receiving both Viplena 120 and cyclosporine therapy, administer cyclosporine 3 hours after Viplena 120.
For patients receiving both Viplena 120 and levothyroxine therapy, administer levothyroxine and Viplena 120 at least 4 hours apart. Patients treated concomitantly with Viplena 120 and levothyroxine should be monitored for changes in thyroid function.
Doses above 120 mg three times a day have not been shown to provide additional benefit.
Based on fecal fat measurements, the effect of Viplena 120 is seen as soon as 24 to 48 hours after dosing. Upon discontinuation of therapy, fecal fat content usually returns to pretreatment levels within 48 to 72 hours.

Viplena 120 interactions
Data from a Viplena 120 and cyclosporine drug interaction study indicate a reduction in cyclosporine plasma levels when Viplena 120 was coadministered with cyclosporine. Viplena 120 and cyclosporine should not be simultaneously coadministered. Cyclosporine should be administered 3 hours after the administration of Viplena 120.
Fat-soluble Vitamin Supplements And Analogues
Data from a pharmacokinetic interaction study showed that the absorption of beta-carotene supplement is reduced when concomitantly administered with Viplena 120. Viplena 120 inhibited absorption of a vitamin E acetate supplement. The effect of Viplena 120 on the absorption of supplemental vitamin D, vitamin A, and nutritionally-derived vitamin K is not known at this time.
Hypothyroidism has been reported in patients treated concomitantly with Viplena 120 and levothyroxine postmarketing. Patients treated concomitantly with Viplena 120 and levothyroxine should be monitored for changes in thyroid function. Administer levothyroxine and Viplena 120 at least 4 hours apart.
Anticoagulants Including Warfarin
Vitamin K absorption may be decreased with Viplena 120. Reports of decreased prothrombin, increased INR and unbalanced anticoagulant treatment resulting in change of hemostatic parameters have been reported in patients treated concomitantly with Viplena 120 and anticoagulants. Patients on chronic stable doses of warfarin or other anticoagulants who are prescribed Viplena 120 should be monitored closely for changes in coagulation parameters.
A pharmacokinetic study, where amiodarone was orally administered during Viplena 120 treatment, demonstrated a reduction in exposure to amiodarone and its metabolite, desethylamiodarone. A reduced therapeutic effect of amiodarone is possible. The effect of commencing Viplena 120 treatment in patients on stable amiodarone therapy has not been studied.
Convulsions have been reported in patients treated concomitantly with Viplena 120 and antiepileptic drugs. Patients should be monitored for possible changes in the frequency and/or severity of convulsions.
Loss of virological control has been reported in HIV-infected patients taking Viplena 120 concomitantly with antiretroviral drugs such as atazanavir, ritonavir, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, emtricitabine, and with the combinations lopinavir/ritonavir and emtricitabine/efavirenz/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. The exact mechanism for this is unclear, but may include a drug-drug interaction that inhibits systemic absorption of the antiretroviral drug. HIV RNA levels should be frequently monitored in patients who take Viplena 120 while being treated for HIV infection. If there is a confirmed increase in HIV viral load, Viplena 120 should be discontinued.
Drug Abuse And Dependence
As with any weight-loss agent, the potential exists for abuse of Viplena 120 in inappropriate patient populations (e.g., patients with anorexia nervosa or bulimia). See INDICATIONS AND USAGE for recommended prescribing guidelines.
Viplena 120 side effects
Some people on Viplena 120™ (Viplena 120 60 mg) will experience GI side effects, which is expected since Viplena 120 (Viplena 120 60 mg) works by inhibiting about 25% of dietary fat. Viplena 120 (Viplena 120 60 mg) is half the strength of prescription Viplena 120® (Viplena 120 120 mg), and, as a result, has fewer GI events overall than Viplena 120®. In clinical trials, subjects on 120 mg withdrew due to GI adverse events at a rate of 5.4%-and at 60 mg it was only 3.2%.
The main treatment effect occurs when an individual eats a meal with too much fat while taking Viplena 120 (Viplena 120 60 mg). Treatment effects may include:
- Loose or more frequent stools that may be hard to control
- An urgent need to go to the bathroom
- Gas with oily spotting
- While excess fat that is excreted is not harmful, patients could be distressed by the experience. Treatment effects can be lessened if an individual sticks with reduced-calorie, low-fat meals that average 15 grams of fat per meal (or 30% fat or less). Diets may vary from 1,200 calories to 1,800 calories per day, so 15 grams is an average. Individuals need to be aware of hidden fat in food, so that they can lower the chance of having treatment effects.
Not all individuals will experience treatment effects, but those that do can reduce the likelihood of these effects by taking Viplena 120 (Viplena 120 60 mg) as directed and sticking with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet. The Viplena 120 (Viplena 120 60 mg) starter pack includes portable reference guides and online support at myalli (Viplena 120 60 mg).com to help patients follow the program accurately. Some patients may experience treatment effects as they begin therapy until they learn to adjust their diet.

Do not give over-the-counter Viplena 120 to a child younger than 18 years old. Prescription Viplena 120 should not be used by anyone age 12 to 18 without the advice of a doctor.
