What is Comtrex Liqui-Gels?
Comtrex Liqui-Gels is a pain reliever and a fever reducer. It is used to treat many conditions, such as headache, muscle aches, arthritis, backache, toothaches, colds, and fevers.
Chlorpheniramine (Comtrex Liqui-Gels) is an antihistamine. It blocks the effects of the naturally occurring chemical histamine in the body. Chlorpheniramine (Comtrex Liqui-Gels) prevents sneezing; itchy, watery eyes and nose; and other symptoms of allergies and hay fever.
Dextromethorphan (Comtrex Liqui-Gels) is a cough suppressant. It suppresses an area in the brain that causes coughing.
Phenylpropanolamine (Comtrex Liqui-Gels) is a decongestant. It constricts (shrinks) blood vessels (veins and arteries) allowing nasal passages to open up.
Comtrex Liqui-Gels/Chlorpheniramine (Comtrex Liqui-Gels)/Dextromethorphan (Comtrex Liqui-Gels)/Phenylpropanolamine (Comtrex Liqui-Gels) is used to treat nasal congestion, sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses), runny nose, watery eyes, headache, body aches, and coughs associated with allergies, hay fever, and the common cold.
Phenylpropanolamine (Comtrex Liqui-Gels), an ingredient in this product, has been associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding into the brain or into tissue surrounding the brain) in women. Men may also be at risk. Although the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is low, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that consumers not use any products that contain Phenylpropanolamine (Comtrex Liqui-Gels).
Comtrex Liqui-Gels/Chlorpheniramine (Comtrex Liqui-Gels)/Dextromethorphan (Comtrex Liqui-Gels)/Phenylpropanolamine (Comtrex Liqui-Gels) may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What other drugs will affect Comtrex Liqui-Gels?
Comtrex Liqui-Gels is metabolized (eliminated by conversion to other chemicals) by the liver. Therefore drugs that increase the action of liver enzymes that metabolize Comtrex Liqui-Gels [for example, carbamazepine (Tegretol), isoniazid (INH, Nydrazid, Laniazid), rifampin (Rifamate, Rifadin, Rimactane)] reduce the levels of Comtrex Liqui-Gels and may decrease the action of Comtrex Liqui-Gels. Doses of Comtrex Liqui-Gels greater than the recommended doses are toxic to the liver and may result in severe liver damage. The potential for Comtrex Liqui-Gels to harm the liver is increased when it is combined with alcohol or drugs that also harm the liver.
Cholestyramine (Questran) reduces the effect of Comtrex Liqui-Gels by decreasing its absorption into the body from the intestine. Therefore, Comtrex Liqui-Gels should be administered 3 to 4 hours after cholestyramine or one hour before cholestyramine.
Comtrex Liqui-Gels doses greater than 2275 mg per day may increase the blood thinning effect of warfarin (Coumadin) by an unknown mechanism. Therefore, prolonged administration or large doses of Comtrex Liqui-Gels should be avoided during warfarin therapy
