What is Emedyl?
Emedyl is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body.
Emedyl is used to treat or prevent nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness.
Emedyl may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Emedyl indications
Emedyl Injection, USP is indicated for the prevention and treatment of nausea, vomiting, or vertigo of motion sickness.
How should I use Emedyl?
Use Emedyl chewable tablets as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- Emedyl chewable tablets may be taken with or without food.
- Chew thoroughly before swallowing.
- Use Emedyl chewable tablets exactly as directed on the package, unless instructed differently by your doctor. If you are taking Emedyl chewable tablets without a prescription, follow any warnings and precautions on the label.
- Take the first dose at least 30 minutes before activity or travel.
- If you miss a dose of Emedyl chewable tablets and you are taking it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Uses of Emedyl in details
Emedyl is an antihistamine used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting and dizziness caused by motion sickness when medication cannot be given by mouth.
Emedyl injection should not be used in newborns because of an increased risk of side effects.

Emedyl is also used to treat symptoms of other motion and balance problems such as feelings of dizziness/spinning (vertigo) and inner ear problems (e.g., Meniere's disease). It may also be used to treat nausea and vomiting due to surgery, radiation sickness, side effects of drug treatment, and other causes.
How to use Emedyl injection
This medication is injected into a vein (IV), or it can be injected into a muscle by a health care professional, as directed by your doctor. Your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Emedyl description
An alkaloid from Solanaceae, especially Datura metel L. and Scopola carniolica. Emedyl and its quaternary derivatives act as antimuscarinics like atropine, but may have more central nervous system effects. Among the many uses are as an anesthetic premedication, in urinary incontinence, in motion sickness, as an antispasmodic, and as a mydriatic and cycloplegic.

Usual Adult Dose for Motion Sickness
-IM: 50 mg every 4 hours injected intramuscularly as needed; Maximum Dose: 100 mg every 4 hours
-IV: 50 mg every 4 hours injected intravenously over a period of 2 minutes; Maximum Dose: 100 mg every 4 hours
-Oral: 50 to 100 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours; Maximum Dose: 400 mg in 24 hours

-For IV administration: Each mL (50 mg) must be diluted in 10 mL of 0.9% sodium chloride injection.
-The first dose should be taken one-half to one hour before starting activity.
-The injectable form is indicated when the oral form is impractical.

Usual Pediatric Dose for Motion Sickness
IM: 1.25 mg/kg OR 37.5 mg/m2 injected intramuscularly 4 times a day; Maximum Dose: 300 mg/day

-Age 2 to 5: 12.5 to 25 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours; Maximum Dose: 75 mg in 24 hours
-Age 6 to 11: 25 to 50 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours; Maximum Dose: 150 mg in 24 hours
-Age 12 and older: 50 to 100 mg orally every 4 to 6 hours; Maximum Dose: 400 mg in 24 hours

Storage Requirements:
-This drug should be protected from moisture and stored at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 Fahrenheit).
General:
-Overdosage: Convulsions, coma, respiratory depression, and drowsiness may occur with overdosage. There is no specific antidote; the manufacturer product information should be consulted for drugs that may be used to treat overdosage effects.
-In mice, the oral LD50 is 203 mg/kg and the intraperitoneal LD50 is 149 mg/kg; the LD50 in rats is 1,320 mg/kg.
-There is no human data indicating this drug is a carcinogen or mutagen.

-Avoid alcoholic drinks, sedatives, and tranquilizers while taking this drug.

What other drugs will affect Emedyl?
The absorption of oral medications may be decreased during the concurrent use of scopolamine because of decreased gastric motility and delayed gastric emptying.
Emedyl should be used with care in patients taking other drugs that are capable of causing CNS effects such as sedatives, tranquilizers, or alcohol. Special attention should be paid to potential interactions with drugs having anticholinergic properties; e.g., other belladonna alkaloids, antihistamines (including meclizine), tricyclic antidepressants, and muscle relaxants.

Side effects include:
Drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, tinnitus, dryness of the mouth and respiratory passages, incoordination, palpitation, dizziness, hypotension.
Paradoxical CNS stimulation in pediatric patients and occasionally in adults.
With IM injection: Pain at the injection site.
Because Emedyl (the active ingredient contained in Emedyl) contains diphenhydramine, the possibility of other diphenhydramine-related adverse effects should also be considered.
